The world of free and open source games has progressed so far there are several that compare to commercial games. But there are 2 that far surpass even some commercial games. One real-time and one turn-based and either can be downloaded now.

1. Glest

This fantasy themed game has been in progress many years and has come to a very impressive state. It supports local multiplayer and internet play a sophisticated tech tree and beautiful 3D graphics. It will probably remind most people of Warcraft III but it’s very different and enjoyable on its own. But wait there’s more. 2. Battle for Wesnoth

If there was ever a game that will consume of multiple hours of your life it is this one. It’s got everything: a good story, fun gameplay and unique and different content. I usually am not a user of turn-based games but this one is an exception. It also has a fantasy setting and while the graphics are only 2D and pretty plain it makes up for it in gameplay and character development. There is a large community around this game and more maps, senarios and campaigns then I ever will have time to try. Give it a try at link below:

As a plus both of these games are open source and free to use always. You will never be asked to register or pay for premium content, they are full games. These are and all games at cross-platform-games.com are cross-platfrom and will work in Windows, Linux and OSX.

If you liked these games I’d also recommend Warzone 2100. A classic in the RTS genre. It’s a futuristic themed RTS with unusual features. It allows players to design units in game. This lets the game support thousands of different units and every opponate will have something different to try. Huge player base online as well.

Also worth mentioning is the SpringRTS engine which many games have been created with including one based on Total Annihilation. Other games such as Kernel Panic feature the insides of a computer waring it out. Very unique in that there is no economy and the only contraint is time and space. There is tons potential here so keep your eye on this one.

For those that enjoy empire building games should try OpenTTD which is a clone of Transport Tycoon Deluxe. Obviously its primary focus is transportation it still has all the fun qualities of any empire building game like Simcity or Civilization.
